Big innovation

When talking pictures were first introduced, not everyone was convinced that they would be a hit. Many people thought they would be a simple fad that would soon be over. Those that didn’t adapt to the changing landscape where never heard from again.

What we’re talking about today is just as big of an innovation.

This is something that tends to get lost on us actors, and you might be wondering what tech innovations have to do with your acting career.

Stick with me for a moment…

When talking pictures were first introduced, not everyone was convinced that they would be a hit. Many people thought they would be a simple fad that would soon be over. Those that didn’t adapt to the changing landscape where never heard from again.

What we’re talking about today is just as big of an innovation.

This is something that tends to get lost on us actors, and you might be wondering what tech innovations have to do with your acting career.

Stick with me for a moment…

Think of it this way, when the industry moved to talking pictures, actors were judged by an entirely different set of criteria. Before “talkies” came about it didn’t matter if you had a pleasant voice or a heavy accent. It was irrelevant until talking pictures became the dominant media.

Those that saw the move coming were able to prepare for it, and seized the opportunity. Those that didn’t, were quickly forgotten.

Think of how quickly the industry adopted CGI. It went from 2D movies with an explosion scene, to full 3D pictures with entire worlds created in CGI. This happened seemingly overnight and it shows no signs of slowing down whatsoever.

What does this mean for you as an actor?

For starters, production is different. It no longer takes place on a faraway island where the surroundings are enough to get you into character. It takes place in a soundstage, under artificial light, while you’re covered head to toe in sensors and wearing a helmet cam to capture your facial expressions. More than ever, your acting skills have to be top notch.

Even more important than that, is how technology is reshaping the casting process. Long gone are the days of talent being discovered at a community theatre production or a cattle call. Today, the actors that are getting attention from Hollywood, are the actors that have the attention of an online community.

It happened in the music business and it’s happening in our business.

The man driving this change is none other than Lyor Cohen, commonly referred to as the most powerful man in the music business.

Lyor Cohen spent decades at the helm of the biggest labels around. Feeling like the industry was too slow to evolve and adapt to the streaming services revenue model, as album sales sharply declined, he started his own label: 300 Entertainment.

He spent 2 years in the heart of Silicon Valley, learning about the coming technology and working to understand how tech could help evolve the music industry.

One of the chief problems that he used technology to solve, was sourcing and launching new talent.

I’ll get to how this all ties into Hollywood and your career in just a sec.

See, what Lyor did was automate that process. The old school way of sending out talent scouts to find new acts, bring them in to record a few demo tracks, market test the demo tracks, and then explore signing them to a full recording contract, was long and cumbersome.

This process could take months. Today, that entire process takes days. What Lyor Cohen did was create a system that scours the web, picks up on emerging artists that are generating attention and puts them on a “watch list.”

If the artist continues to generate positive attention, the system then recommends that artist to the executives, who can act quickly to sign the artist and launch them much faster than ever before.

This is where it starts to affect your career. See, Lyor’s company 300 Entertainment was actually a joint venture with Google.

Something you should know about Google is that they, self admittedly, only focus on “moonshots.” This means that they will only tackle problems that can grow the company 10X instead of a measly 10%.

You know that YouTube super channel that has the best music, VEVO? It is actually a joint venture owned by Universal, Sony, and yep Google!

This is important because YouTube, a Google company, has long since been positioning itself as the next major studio. It is now bank rolling content creation, and has built production studios around the world, to produce its own shows.

For about ten bucks, you can already catch some of them on YouTube Red.

YouTube is about to make the leap and declare itself a studio. The move isn’t surprising. Other tech companies have done the same thing with much success. Netflix now has a production arm, so do Hulu, and Amazon amongst many others.

Even Gary Vaynerchuck has stated time and time again that soon the major networks will no longer be ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX. They will be social media and tech companies, turned into studios.

The cards are falling exactly into place. Facebook live is a mere precursor to streaming content. Why turn on the TV and channel surf, when your favorite shows are waiting for you on your timeline?

The investments that Facebook is making into virtual reality are not in vain. The company is positioning itself for a time when the television is no longer the way we consume entertainment.

Facebook is already in the entertainment business, and shifting into producing content rather than just giving you the ability to share it, is the next step in their business.

The fact that the industry is shifting into being controlled by tech companies means several things.

Namely, what tech companies focus on, is taking humans out of the equation, replacing them with algorithms and machines.

You already see it happening with drone technology in production. It used to take a team of 3-4 people to operate a camera dolly. Now all it takes is 1 dude, a drone, and an iPhone to accomplish the same thing.

This kind of monumental shift is happening where it matters to you most of all: The Casting Office.

See the man behind this movement, Lyor Cohen, announced that he has partnered with the leading social media platforms to “identify emerging artists and develop their careers.” He went on to say “If you want to get signed, you have to engage with Social Media, and of course YouTube…this is what allows artists to be discovered and be more successful.”

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that this will be isolated to music business. It has already bled over into our business, you might just not have noticed it yet.

When the head of the newest major studio in town tells you the secret to being noticed by them, you should take note of it.

What has happened is that industry has basically declared that social media is the way in. The reason is simple. If you control social media, you control attention. If you control attention, you control a revenue stream for the studio. Remember, this is show business. At the end of the day it’s about revenue for the studios.

So let me ask you a simple but bold question, grasshopper…

What did you do today to grow your social media presence and build your credibility in the industry?

If you did anything at all, was it a moonshot or a safe play?

The studios are no longer letting talent come to them by mere chance. They are actively going out and searching for it. They’re just doing it with computers these days.

This means that you don’t have a CD to impress anymore. You first have to impress the computer before you can even get to the Casting Director.

How do you do that?

Simple! I’ve actually been telling you about it for quite some time now. Build your social media following and boost your IMDb STARmeter, the industry’s measure of your credibility. Go here for all of the details on that.

Do this and your chances of success skyrocket.

Industry executives are telling you that this is the way in. So start heading in that direction.

Or don’t and just keep doing what you’re doing and getting the same results that you’ve been getting so far.

…understand however that it might just be your last chance for a very long time.

Because of how much work goes into building your social media following and boosting your IMDb STARmeter, I have to ensure that our team can handle the workload of bringing on new members.

We are just about at 100% capacity.

So, if you go here and the details are gone, that means we have officially closed the program. It’s a pretty lengthy process to expand our capacity, so when that happens I cannot be sure if or when it would reopen.

Do yourself a favor and go check it out now while it’s fresh on your mind.

If you decide that it’s not right for you and you want to go it alone, no biggie. I’ll still be around with more insider info and career igniting strategies.

However, you don’t know what you don’t know. So go and get the details while you still can or risk missing out.

Talk soon,

A Tale of Two Mindys

She had the best of times. She had the worst of times. She embodies the age of wisdom. The other sees the age of foolishness. For one it was the epoch of belief, for the other it was the epoch of incredulity.

For one Mindy it is the season of light, for the other it is the winter of despair.

This is A Tale of Two Mindys.

Dear grasshopper,

In this release you will discover how just a few seemingly small moves will make huge differences in the outcome of your career.

Think of it this way.

Picture yourself behind the wheel of your car. Pulling just a millimeter or two to the right won’t seem like a big deal, until you travel a couple hundred feet and end up 3 lanes over from where you started.

This is why we constantly have to course correct when we drive. Those small deviations have big consequences.

If you think of your career in this way, it becomes much easier to realize how just a few small deviations from the plan might have drastic consequences down the road.

Making a simple exception and accepting a role that you weren’t really suited for or passing on a project you never gave the time of day, could make a dramatic difference in the way your career turns out.

Conversely, making a few simple choices like the ones you’ll discover today will mean the difference between living your dreams like one of our Mindys, or wondering where it all went wrong like the other Mindy.

Mindy Kaling fascinates me because she has accomplished so much of what we aspire to, as actors. After making just one calculated move, more on this in a second, her career took off like a rocket.

She’s kind of an accidental actress. Her career began with stand up comedy where she had some success but nothing noteworthy.

What happened next, is something that is way too uncommon in the industry. She wrote a spec script for what became the hit NBC TV Show, The Office. This led her to be hired as a writer and subsequently cast as Kelly for a show that was largely made up of writers turned actors.

Had she passed on the role and stuck to just writing, she would never have ended up with the career she enjoys today. It’s an example of one of those choices, akin to a few millimeters of change behind the wheel, that made all the difference.

Instead of saying “but I’m not an actress” she went all in and accepted the challenge.

She had the opportunity to write a spec script and rather than focusing on all of the reasons why it might be a waste of time, she took the good with the bad and went all in.

This is something that Mindy 1 was never able to do. Mindy 1 has a few notable credits and you would immediately recognize her face. Her career took a downturn after being presented with a similar opportunity.

Mindy 1’s star was on the rise, after a few performances that were very well received in projects that were successful. Mindy 1’s agent approached her with an opportunity to work on an indie film with a shoestring budget.

With more opportunities coming her way than ever before, Mindy 1 admits that the first question she asked her agent was “are they going to be able to pay my quote?”

Because they weren’t going to be able to come anywhere near her quote at the time, Mindy 1 passed on the project for which she would have been a 3rd lead. Instead she opted to go with a 3 episode recurring role on a new TV show which paid more than she had ever earned.

That show didn’t make into a second season nor would she have ever been guaranteed to reprise her role on the series.

The project she passed on went to Sundance, was bought by a major studio, and it even won a couple of Oscars.

It also made some of the cast members into household names and even resurrected a former A lister’s career, whose star long since faded.

Ari Gold put it this way “the industry doesn’t penalize you for doing a bad movie but it does penalize you for passing.”

Aside from this, you will see that Mindy Kaling has done something that we constantly talk about here at Boost My Star. She specialized in a character type which she has said is “an amped up version” of herself.

Mindy 1 never took that advice to heart. She went out for any and every role and her credits are quite diverse. Remember that while this sounds good on paper, the reality is that by doing this you are never able to achieve mastery or recognition with any character type.

Everyone at the top of their industry, from Napoleon Hill to Steve Jobs, has said that having a team of people with whom you collaborate with is instrumental to your success.

Our business is no different.

Mindy Kaling has surrounded herself with a number of people with whom she collaborates regularly. They have been instrumental in advancing her career, helping to create The Mindy Project (which she stars in) and her follow up project which is also with a major studio.

Having partners like this creates a kind of synergy that is truly magical. This is why you see so many comedy troupes that operate almost exclusively as a unit.

Because she moved from one project to the next, looking only for the next opportunity that came her way instead of utilizing the resources and people around her, Mindy 1 was never able to create this kind of cooperative. Remember that no one is an island.

Something that Mindy Kaling has also mastered is the ability to create characters for which she has an implicit first right of refusal. This comes as the by product of two of our core concepts at Boost My Star: the category of one concept, and the concept of specializing in a character.

Several other blockbuster actors used this exact strategy to launch their careers. Sylvester Stallone refused to sell his screenplay, unless he was guaranteed the role of Rocky Balboa.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck did the same for Good Will Hunting and would likely be completely unknown to us today if they hadn’t done so.

This doesn’t mean that you have to go out and write Academy Award winning screenplays. What is important is that you provide some kind of differentiator.

This could be something simple like the Asian Female Rapper “Awkwafina”.

Coincidentally, she is costarring in the upcoming film, Ocean’s 8, alongside Mindy Kaling and a star studded cast. In case you don’t know who Awkwafina is, check out her YouTube channel.

She recently released an album that contains several songs she originally released on YouTube. Because of her social media following, so many doors have opened for her in such a short period of time. From TV hosting, to an album, and now even starring in a major studio picture.

This brings up yet another one of core concepts: building your social media platform to boost your influence and credibility in the industry.

There are examples of this all over. At the center of Mindy Kaling’s success is: a popular blog and big social following.

What brought several opportunities for Awkwafina that most of us will kill for? Social Media.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been talking quite a bit about this because it’s that important. I’ve also given you several opportunities to build your own social media presence and industry credibility faster than ever before.

The details on that are here.

So many of our tribe members have seen the light, and because I’ve made it such a no brainer for you to get started, a record number of you have declared that you are taking your career into your own hands and have seized the opportunity. You can read about it here.

This record growth means that, we will soon have to close down the system to new actors. I hate to do this, but it is important that we are able to give each of you everything you need to be successful. Once we reach full capacity, the system will be closed to new actors.

Honestly, I don’t know when it’ll reopen. So go check it out while you still have a chance.

Remember, you career will be determined by just a few key moves that you make. If you already have all of the gigs you want, then good! Keep doing what you’re doing. If you want more. Then go here now while it’s fresh on your mind.

See on the other side,

Scott

Faceless Hollywood

Faceless Hollywood. You may have never heard of it, but you sure do know of it. It’s made up of actors that are quietly living the dream. Only, that dream may not look like what Hollywood dreams are typically made of.

It’s their own version of the dream. No paparazzi. Few red carpets and in many cases, no red carpets. Some of these actors have a statue or a golden globe on the mantle, but it’s definitely the exception.

Faceless Hollywood is more about the craft than the fanfare. It’s a place where actors just get to be actors.

They work and make a good living doing what they love, all while avoiding the politics that pollute the higher levels of the studio system. The actors that make up faceless Hollywood are not marquee actors by any means, yet they get to star along the biggest names in the industry and work on the biggest projects around.

Most of them are highly talented and could definitely climb to the upper echelons of the industry if they chose to but it’s not what they are after. In fact, you might catch them on the set of Twilight one day and the next day they’re trying to a finish a scene at The Grove before security notices.

We’re not talking about extras or 1 liners either. These are actors with real credits and satisfying roles. Like Jill Flint who is currently starring as Dr. Alexander on NBC’s The Night Shift, or Danny Trejo who has been in more projects than most actors will ever even read for.

What these actors all have in common is that they have a real passion and love for what they do. They don’t take a role to buy another beach house. When they play a role they breathe life into it because they love what they do.

It’s refreshing to see that in our business these days, isn’t it? During a time when reality TV reigns dominant over scripted shows and when it seems that everyone is setting out to become Instagram famous just to have a shot at the next season of Bad Girls Club, it’s nice to see actors who are passionate about their craft succeed.

Their roads to getting there are as varied as the roles they play.

Take Danny Trejo for example. For over 30 years he has been on television and has appeared in as many as 5 feature films in a single year. Though you might know him as the star of the action flick Machete, he never set out to be an actor.

He fell into it by accident. Danny was fresh out of San Quentin prison and newly sober when he got a call from a fellow recovering addict, who happened to be an actor. They had both served time together and Danny was summoned to help keep him sober on set. While there Danny was offered a role as a speaking extra and he fell in love with it. He was fascinated by the hustle and bustle of being on set.

“It made me feel alive” he says. From then on, Danny went all in. He auditioned for anything and everything. “I figured that it was a numbers game. If I went on enough auditions, I knew I would get a certain number of castings and be able to feed my family without going back to the streets” he said in an interview.

“A lot of people say that you have to take a lot of rejection to be an actor. I never noticed it. I just kept going. I love the game. It’s a thrill for me, going into an audition and not knowing what’s going to happen. And it paid off!...When I got Machete, I thought I was dreaming. I never thought that coming from where I’m from I would ever do a franchise film. I was happy just getting a co-star role in a couple of episodes every year.”

Danny Trejo happens to a very gritty looking Latino man with long hair and tattoos. The roles he plays may not suit you well, but if you take a look at his career, you notice something that has become a recurring theme over the last few releases.

He created a category of one. When Hollywood needs a gritty latino, he’s the one they call. And he stays very busy, since there are more roles of this kind than he could possibly handle.

Jill Flint has credits such as the Incredible Spider Man and Cadillac Records. Looking through her credits you will see roles of 3 episodes, 4 episodes, second leads and minor speaking roles. You then see 51 episodes and a leading role as Dr. Alexander.

This happened when she, you guessed it, decided to take the next step in her career and focus on a role that she could knock out of the park and that suited her well. She’s yet another example of an actor dominating a category.

Step 1: hone your skills

Most of these actors began their careers on stage. There is simply no match for the energy that a live crowd provides. It’s unforgiving and there are no “take 3s” on stage, nor can you yell out “line!”

It’s probably the best place to hone your skills and all of the actors that make up faceless Hollywood, have skills. Rather than powerhouse agents and studio politics they rely on skills to get their next gig.

So if you want to book steady gigs that are artistically rewarding and that also fill up your checking account, be sure to sharpen your actor’s sword. Work on your skillset for at least a half hour every day. Whether it’s a monologue or improv class doesn’t matter, just pick something and stick with it.

Step 2: Be disciplined and be everywhere

Another trait that is prevalent among this group is a stellar work ethic and discipline. It goes without saying but how many of us could go on 69 auditions, hear “no” 69 times and keep at it? Most of us wouldn’t even get past no #9.

Because the actors of faceless Hollywood built their careers in what is probably the hardest viable way possible, they had to develop a tremendous work ethic and a ton of discipline.

That kind of begs the question. If this is the hard way, go on 300 auditions every year until someone notices your talent, what is the easier way to break into the faceless Hollywood scene?

Step 3: leverage your time

Simple: cut down on the shotgun approach to auditioning. Leverage your platform and get in the room with casting directors who can book you for 3 different shows, or who are slated to cast multiple upcoming films.

The info on how to do that is here.

Look, As a member of the tribe, you already have some acting credits to boast about and you’re on way to making it in this business. I just want to help you get to where you want to go much faster.

Why struggle and do things the hard way when something better exists.

Learn from those that have paved the way for you and improve on what they have done. In this case the most logical thing to do would be to build and leverage a platform that makes it impossible for a casting director to cast someone else.

If you do this, not only will you get in the room much more often, you will book jobs at a much higher rate. This will allow you to spend more time working and less time looking for work.

And that is what I want for you: to spend your time doing what you love and enjoying the career that you deserve.

Cult leaders and your career.

Riddle me this: what do cult leaders, politicians, and star actors have in common? They all know how to build a following and create a cult-ure that bends to their will.

In any great movement whether it’s getting someone elected to public office, convincing a group of followers to drink the Kool Aid, or building a base of raving fans that follow your every move, there are a couple of things that are always present.

First and foremost, there is a charismatic, future pacing leader at the helm of the movement.

I’ll give you an example.

If you think back to the 1980s there was a great surge in interest for Sci Fi projects and directors like Steven Spielberg and James Cameron made their names by capitalizing on the movement. This wasn’t by accident. Ten years earlier or ten years later, their stars would have been much dimmer.

See, the interest in Sci Fi films coincided with the public’s interest in space and exploration because of the NASA space shuttle program.

On a similar note, Michael Moore and Bowling for Columbine would not have created such a stir ten years earlier or ten years later.

As actors we are creatives. We tend to get caught up in the artistic side of the business and overlook the bigger picture. Because success in the industry is always by design, our career moves must not be made haphazardly.

If you want to create a movement that inspires people to follow your every move, you have to meet them where they are. Once you appeal to their present mindset, you can take them boldly into the future.

I’m not going on a tangent here. Stick with me.

Take James Cameron and Avatar, one of the reasons that film worked so well is that we all have that desire in the back of our minds to plug in and be an avatar.

Take Spielberg for example. When his career took off, he met millions of people where they were: with an interest in space exploration and Sci Fi and he filled that desire. Demand for projects like his increased and Hollywood responded by filling the demand and greenlighting Spielberg films. He became the Sci Fi guy.

This holds true across any genre, not just Sci Fi. Take Romantic Comedies for example. Kate Hudson became one of the charismatic leaders of the Rom Com movement. And because she always gets the guy in the end, she fills that desire in the hearts of the audience.

See we call ourselves entertainers but it’s often so much more than that. We provide the audience with an avenue through which they can live vicariously through us, or relive the glory days through our projects.

So many of us get stuck in the Trench of Regret because we are not reaching the levels of success that we seek, as quickly as we want it.

The only way to fix this is to take a step back and specialize. Become a category of one.

Remember that concept from weeks prior? Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you will be typecast. That is the old school way of thinking and it’s flawed logic.

Have you ever heard of a “Jack of all trades and master of none?”

I’m sure you have and the industry abides by this too.

Look, you can’t earn a reputation for being a world class actor by playing a character type once and then moving on to next. This makes you completely forgettable. It’s like allowing someone to have a single bite of a stellar meal or one single sip of a terrific wine.

They can’t fall in love with you with such limited exposure.

Think of actors that have legendary careers. Take George Clooney for example, when was the last time you saw him play a role that wasn’t cunning, charming, and after something that would fulfill a matter of the heart? If you want someone to play this role then Clooney is the only logical choice. He is a category of one.

Think of someone with a more colorful career, like Johnny Depp. On the surface, it may seem that his roles are highly diverse. But if you start to dissect them, you’ll quickly see that at their core they are in fact the same.

Johnny Depp always plays an off the wall character with numerous ticks and quirks that are beyond over the top. When was the last time he played an accountant, for example? Can you imagine anyone else playing jack Sparrow or Willy Wonka? He is a category of one.

The most successful actors have all specialized.

What you may not realize is that once an actor (like yourself) has successfully created a category of one. The industry begins to rearrange itself to fill the demand of the character you have just created. New projects are slated and greenlit with you in mind. What could be better than this?

It makes perfect sense! Hollywood is a business and the law of supply and demand rings as true as in every other business.

Just look at films like How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. The project wasn’t out there floating haphazardly, it was slated to fill the demand of the category that Kate Hudson had created for herself: The All American Rom Com girl.

Don’t take this to mean that once you select a character you want to specialize in, you’ll be stuck with it forever. Not by a long shot!

Your career will go through a natural progression and evolution.

Look at the evolutionary arch of Matthew McConoughey. Dallas Buyers Club is a far cry from The Wedding Planner, but what’s important to note is that he evolved to it.

Remember the term we keep using is ”category of one.” This doesn’t mean one category. You can and will evolve from one category to the next.

Think of Jennifer Garner and projects like Alias and The Kingdom. These were much different than Juno and Miracles from Heaven.

As actors, we boast about the diversity of our talent with much pride. We wear the ability to go from stunts and pyro to tear jerker as a badge of honor, and by all means you should!

The only way to have longevity in the industry is to have a genuine talent, otherwise you’ll end up like the Freddy Prinze Jrs. of the world: little more than a flash in the pan.

Getting to that next level in your career requires doing things differently. Remember that we’ve been talking about executing with the right mechanics is what ultimately leads to success. In this case that means specializing.

The only caveat to that is, if you already have more than enough work as an actor, then keep doing what you’re doing!

However, if your calendar isn’t full, If you could use more gigs, or if you just know that you deserve and are capable of so much more than the career you currently have, it’s time to do somethings differently.

Execute with the right mechanics and everything else will fall into place.

Because you are a member of the tribe, you have an opportunity to make the execution much easier and achieve success much faster. Go here to learn more.

You already know that you need to increase your reach on social media and increase your industry credibility in order to be taken seriously and get the big auditions and opportunities. Executing on everything here, is Step 2.

Get all the details about Step 1 here.

Go to Step 1 and then come back here and start working on Step 2.

Did he drown?

His head was held firmly underwater. His arms were frantically flailing and splashing. As he struggled to breathe, the young guy could feel the life escaping him. Feeling like his face was about to explode, the hand on the back of his neck pulled the young guy out of the water.

He collapsed at the river bank, savoring every breathe he feverishly took. Finally able to catch his breath, the young guy asked of the perpetrator “What was that for? [gasp] You could have killed me! [gasp]”

“Young man, when you crave success the way you craved a breath of fresh air…that is when you will succeed. That is the secret of success.”

“Young man, when you crave success the way you craved a breath of fresh air…that is when you will succeed. That is the secret of success.”

Dear grasshopper,

I don’t remember when I first heard that parable or even where I first heard it, but it is absolutely true!

Success in any business, but especially in the entertainment business is never a maybe thing.

It is deliberate. It is always a go all in, risk it all, go big or go home endeavor.

Are you a pretender or an actor?

Are you going all in, or just pretending you are so that you don’t have to face the music about how you gave up a long time ago?

Since you’re here reading this release when you could be seeing what #GrumpyCat is up to these days, let’s me know that you want to succeed as an actor.

In this release, I am going to be bringing you wisdom from the very beginnings of the industry, through today.

One of the recurring themes that you will notice is that, without fail, those that became legends in the industry and shaped the way you and I get to perform our craft today, went all in-all the time.

There was no in between. There was no gray zone of safety. They didn’t preface actions with “I’ll do this when I ____.”

None of them took no for an answer. When there was no way, they literally created the way and it paid off big time!

Take Lois Weber, for example. She has been credited as “the most important female director ever.”

She entered the industry at a time when women weren’t even allowed to vote! Despite hitting every barrier that her male counterparts hit, she also had to deal with a gender bias.

Yet, she is credited with the very first full frontal female nude scene with the film The Hypocrites.

In an interview, towards the end of her days, she said. “I didn’t see myself as a woman on set. I always saw myself as an artist. And art sees no gender, no color.”

So, what can you learn from her? There are no limitations to what you can do. It is all perception and will. If you feel that something is holding you back or keeping you from building the career you deserve, do what Lois Weber did with her 1916 film “Where are my children”.

Attack your perceived limitation head on.

This will put you in control of the issue and the conversation. That film was about abortion and birth control…in 1916. At a time when pants were a no-no, and women were not considered worthy of the right to vote, Lois Weber took control of the conversation surrounding her.

Your perceived limitations are likely minor by comparison.

Are you short? Stop putting risers in your shoes. Embrace your stature and create a category of one, where you are the only logical choice.

Are you a few pounds “healthier” than the industry norm? Spanx is not the answer. Create a category of one and dominate it. Amy Schumer style.

I’ll explain. Have you ever noticed that when a kid actor is discovered, all of sudden there are a dozen films slated that suit them perfectly?

Remember Haley Joel Osment and his meteoric rise following the Sixth Sense?

Same with Dakota Fanning. She rode her wave to War of the Worlds and beyond. Her star began to fade, when she became sort of lost in a sea of teenage actors which she mostly blended into.

Now think of an arrogant, almost smug but likeable middle aged actor with an unshakeable southern drawl…

Who comes to mind?

Billy Bob Thornton. Category of one.

He didn’t take 1001 speech lessons to learn to “talk Yankee.” He embraced what his limitation was and created a category around it.

Not to diminish his work, but I don’t think he would have had the career he enjoys today without embracing that southern drawl. Think about it. Does Armageddon work with a different actor in his place? Hard to imagine.

The theme of going all in is echoed in the story of Samuel Goldwyn. He arrived in the United States as an undocumented immigrant, after walking over the Canadian Border.

He had no formal education, no money, and simply went all in and figured it out. He was a founder of several major studios from Paramount to his namesake, MGM.

Starting as a glove salesman who left Warsaw, Poland on foot, and arrived in the US on foot, he went on to usher in the Golden Age of Hollywood. It wasn’t because he sold gloves and made films on the side.

He went all in! He didn’t take no for answer and when he encountered an obstacle, he found a different way.

His career is similar to that of David Geffen. They both built businesses, and either sold them or merged the businesses in ways not seen before their time. This was often their way finding an alternative route to get what they were after.

Geffen left the William Morris Agency to become a talent manager. While seeking a record deal for one of his acts, David kept hitting a wall.

No one wanted to give the unproven act a chance. So Geffen started his own label, signing the act to it. The rest is history. He went on to lead several other

companies, most recently DreamWorks SKG, yet another venture founded to “create a way.”

The takeaway here? Go boldly where others have been unwilling to go and do what they have been afraid to do.

Success isn’t always about breaking through barriers. Sometimes you just have to find a different way to get to your end goal.

What is that for you? Maybe no one wants to give you a chance at a leading role…so create one for yourself. It’s actually how Sylvester Stallone got his career off the ground.

Nobody would cast him, so Stallone wrote Rocky and shopped the script until someone agreed to fund the picture and allowed him to star in it.

See, it’s not always about simply refusing to quit. Often, success requires that you step back and take the road less traveled by. You might be thinking. “Sounds great Scott” but I can’t write a script!

So partner with someone who can. There are as many writers looking for opportunities in this town, as there are actors. Find a director that is seeking the same as you two and together you will have everything you need to get a great project off the ground.

Create what you need. Whether it’s an opportunity or a mere introduction. Create it!

Howard Hughes, during the filming of Hell’s Angels, pioneered and created an entirely new way of capturing live action. Unsatisfied with the look of the film, he created his own style of capturing the action in such a way that put the viewer in the midst of it.

This is similar to what James Cameron pioneered with Avatar. He created a 3D world almost completely in CGI. This hadn’t been done before, but realizing that his vision could not come to life using traditional means, Cameron created an entirely new technology to accomplish it.

So grasshopper, it’s time for you to do the same. Go create, fail and find a different way. Never stop trying but don’t make things hard on yourself either.

My inspiration for creating the BoostMyStar system and Community came from David Geffen. I looked around to find something that would provide me with the tools and strategies that I needed to succeed in the industry and found nothing.

So I created it. What we have in our tribe is special. It is actors from all walks of life, coming together with the goal of breaking into the industry by giving themselves an overwhelming advantage.

It’s what BoostMyStar allows you to do. You can immediately use it to give yourself credibility and leverage in the industry.

Every time I get an email from a member of the tribe celebrating a recent win, my heart swells with pride and joy.

I’m very proud of what we were able to create and you can read all about the BoostMyStar system here.

After all, this is where it starts. You can apply everything above and execute it perfectly, but if you don’t have the right pieces in place to get in the room and close the deal you’re just making it hard on yourself.

So, if you want to make it in the entertainment industry as badly as you want to breathe, this is the logical next step.

Go here now and you will see how this fits perfectly into the equation and how it will give you a tremendous advantage and set wheels motion, starting today.

Howard Hughes is credited with putting the final nail in the coffin of the Studio System in Hollywood. What will your mark on this town be?

It doesn’t have to be something as grand as that but it should be something. So, make it easy on yourself and check this out.

Until next time or until we cross paths on the lot,

- Scott

TSEI: For Tribe Members Eyes Only.

It was July of 2003. United States Army General Joe Gordy sat in a taxpayer funded room, staring at a goat that was also raised and kept using tax dollars.

His mission? Stop the goat’s heart...really! A highly decorated, real American Hero was tasked by the US Government to kill a goat using the ultimate weapon: his mind.

Sound crazy? It’s about to get even weirder!

Wondering what this has to do with you as an actor? You will see how the dots connect in just a moment.

First, you have to understand a few things. General Gordy’s mission actually had its beginnings about 30 years prior when the US Army began experimenting with things like remote viewing (the ability to see into a room that you are not physically in), walking through walls (just as it sounds walking through a freaking wall), the use of music and subliminal messaging (mostly how they could be applied in interrogations and for crowd control).

Stick with me here because this is important.

The US Army has in fact gone on record about being able to do some of these things and more. For example, the official and now unclassified documents show that Panamanian Dictator Gen. Manuel Noriega was actually captured with the involvement of a remote viewer. The individual was able to “see” inside Noriega’s compound and provide strike forces with his exact location and his every move.

This ultimately led to the successful capture of the Latin American Dictator.

There is so much craziness that I could spend days talking with you about, because it’s really that interesting. But I need to get to what this all means to you as an actor and start connecting the dots.

So, fast forward to 2003 and General Gordy. While he was staring at the goat, attempting to stop its heart, the Army was also still experimenting with the use of music and subliminal messaging.

While the specifics of how they were doing this are ultimately irrelevant, what’s important is to note that once again they [the US Army and the US Government] went on record with spectacular discoveries and accomplishments in the field of mental programming using music and subliminal messaging.

Here’s where the dots begin to connect for you.

See, the army definitively came up with a recipe to implant suggestions into a human brain that the individual would subconsciously adapt and live by. This allowed the army to mentally coerce someone into complying with their demands during an interrogation for example, or even causing large crowds to simply dissipate and stop an uprising.

That recipe for implanting suggestions into the human brain that the Army discovered, is what I am going to be training you on.

Now before I get to the nitty gritty step by step details, I have to first make a couple of things clear. Once you learn this, you will never again look at person to person communication the same again.

You will also have abilities far beyond that of the average human being. So use your newfound powers only for good my dear grasshopper.

Now, let me also be clear. I am not going to train you on how to walk into an audition and somehow hypnotize the casting director into mindlessly hiring you. That is next to impossible and waaaay out of the scope of what we’re talking about here.

What I will train you to do is structure your communications with them, and anyone you encounter really, in such a way that primes their mind to be receptive to new ideas (such as giving you a shot and hiring you or even just giving you a call back).

Plus, I am also going to train you on how to use these same strategies to prime your own mind, in order to be able to genuinely access your own emotions with zero inhibitions or hesitation. The ultimate mark of an inexperienced actor is being too much in her own head.

This will eliminate that for good!

Because when you master this skill, the emotional triggers you pull at will be 100% genuine. Meaning that you will no longer be acting. Rather, you will be experiencing and expressing, while taking the audience along for the ride.

You have probably heard of a watered-down version of this technique, called Neuro Linguistic Programming, or NLP. Some of the biggest stars in the world credit NLP with kicking them into high gear.

What you are learning today is the granddaddy of NLP. The original source if you will.

Because of the complexity of all of this, I am going to be putting all of the material into a master series beginning today with the concepts contained in this release.

First and foremost, the easiest place for you to begin your journey, is through mastering the 3XRule.

Remember this is a no fluff, no filler zone.

The 3XRule simply speaks to your higher mind by priming it with “truths.”

The US Army’s research discovered that it only takes 2 truths for your brain to automatically assume that the 3rd phrase it hears is also a “truth.”

For example, if you were to walk into an audition and replace your current banter with the following, imagine what the results would be.

“Hello, you are the legendary Joe Casting!” Truth 1. The Casting Director’s name “You also worked on Midnight Hour” Truth 2 A project they recently worked on

“I’m a great fit for this role, because I can see how your previous choices were for actors with my kind of experience.” Truth 3 This is the assumptive truth. Because you have presented them with 2 truths that are irrefutably true (no matter how simple they are), you have primed them to agree that you are a great fit for the role, before ever reading a line.

When you do this correctly, their brain will then look to discredit this truth, rather than prove it to be true. So the role is now yours to lose.

Follow me?

It sounds super simple because it is. But, think of it this way. We are more or less 1,000 years removed from the jungle. Our brains have been evolving for many, many millennia and are wired to observe things that we take for granted but that were crucial to the survival of our ancestors.

For example:

“Fire bright” Truth 1.

“Fire hot” Truth 2

“I touch fire, I get burned” Truth 3, the assumptive truth that kept caveman from leaping into the flames.

After all, he had no prior experience with fire and because his brain connected the first 2 truths, it made the leap to assume that the 3rd observation was also a truth.

So, in essence, what we’re doing is exploiting the vulnerabilities in our ever-evolving brain. Here’s how you apply this principle to the role itself.

Now, I want you to picture that you have successfully landed the role and you’re on set. Using the same 3XRule, here is how you would trick you brain into being super confident and get rid of any mental blocks, before they even present themselves.

“I’m working on Midnight Hour.” Truth 1. This is the project you are working on.

“The character I am playing is Christopher.” Truth 2. This is the character you are playing.

“Christopher is just an extension of me because we have similar life experiences.” Truth 3. This is the assumptive truth. Even if the character you are playing is nothing like you, you have just primed and instructed your brain to look for the similarities.

Understand that this pulls you out of acting on a conscious level. This is important because we react, on the subconscious plane, up to an astonishing 100 times faster than we react on the conscious level.

Meaning that by pulling yourself out of the conscious plane, your brain will begin to trigger micro expressions much faster than you could even consciously think to do so.

This is what separates a “good actor” from a legendary actor.

In his New York Times Bestselling Book “blink” Malcolm Gladwell details micro expressions as being “difficult or impossible to hide...[they] cannot be controlled because they happen in a fraction of a second.”

Conincidentally, it is these micro expressions that the brain looks for and uses to discern whether an interaction with another person is genuine or manufactured.

So, by activating your brain to trigger these micro expressions, which are what communicates to the audience whether an interaction is real or not, you are putting yourself head and shoulders above the other actors who may have spent years training themselves to “look sad.”

By simply using the 3XRule on yourself to activate micro expressions while delivering your lines, you will be communicating to the audience’s subconscious mind, causing them to blur the lines between film and fact since they are hard wired to look for these micro expressions.

Your every performance will be nothing short of genius!

Because I always want to give you just the right amount of actionable information to keep you busy and keep you from becoming overwhelmed, I want to give over just one more strategy for today.

It’s called Magnetic Attention. This is probably the most important piece of what you will learn in this release today and really, throughout the entire series. If you cannot get someone’s attention, then nothing else will matter.

Note that what I am referring to is magnetic attention. This shouldn’t be confused with arbitrary attention-getting like simply telling jokes and getting “cheap laughs.”

What I am referring to is just as it says. Magnetically drawing people closer to you as if there were a literal magnet beaming out from your chest.

Have you ever seen someone walk into a room and command attention, just with their presence?

They have everyone wondering who they are, what they’re all about all without even recognizing anyone else’s presence.

That is magnetic attention. It’s a skill that has to be developed and honed and it will take a bit of practice, but once you achieve magnetic attention, you will be able to turn it on like a switch.

Imagine being that person that walks into a room and draws everyone’s attention...What if you could do this in an audition? Walk in and have the casting director magnetically drawn to you, wondering who you are and what you’re all about.

In essence, what you are doing is creating instant rapport. This is also as simple as 1, 2, 3.

First, you have to be present. This means you have to live in the moment, be fully in the room and partaking in what is going on. You should know the lines well enough to not be distracted by thinking about them. There is little else to do when going into an audition so keep your head in the game.

Be fully present! A great example of this in action is former president Bill Clinton. He is constantly referred to as the most charismatic man alive. YouTube a few clips and watch the way in which he greets someone and shakes hands. It’s as if the entire outside world has simply disappeared.

Ask questions. Remember to always abide by the 3XRule that you just learned, but once you have moved beyond that stage, ask plenty of questions. Everyone’s favorite subject is?...Themselves of course.

So instead of seizing every opportunity to talk yourself up and show off your credentials, you should be looking for and creating opportunities to ask questions about the other person (in this case the casting director).

This works extremely well for people in a position of power and influence. Because they are accustomed to everyone around them trying to impress and “look good”, you will immediately stand out and above everyone else simply by asking good questions.

Exude confidence. Every life coach on the planet will tell you to be confident. I’m telling you to exude confidence. Big difference! When you exude confidence, you become like Teflon. Nothing sticks to you because nothing matters. You are secure in who you are and you operate as though you are on a mission.

The easiest and fastest way to get unending confidence is by giving yourself a leg up on the competition. The edge that this gives our tribe members is so powerful that they always go into an audition knowing they have an advantage over everyone else.

So what are you waiting for?
Go check it out now

Having the confidence that it brings you is key to making sure that everything else contained in this release works the way it is supposed to.

When you consider that we are talking about you having the ability to make your audience experience exactly what you want them to through your lines and actions (making them forget that it’s simply a movie or TV show)...

And having the ability to frame every conversation you will ever have with a casting director from now on in such a way that it sets you up as the only logical choice for the part...

Shouldn’t you also go here and ensure that you have every advantage when it comes to having the confidence necessary to make everything else possible?

Remember I always want to give you just enough to act on right away so that you can master everything quickly without ever feeling overwhelmed. So you have the 3 things to work on. Go out and make happen! I’ll be back soon with another installment and another release before you know it.

Talk soon, Scott

P.S. If you try and use the 3XRule without the necessary confidence to make the conversation seem natural, it is simply not going to work. So seriously, give yourself an advantage and confidence boost from the start and check this out now.

ATTENTION ALL ACTORS: Once you see how EASY the $100K from acting formula is, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner...

How To Quickly and Easily Earn A Living As An Actor
So You Can Finally Go Full Time and Fulfill Your Dreams

Dear grasshopper,

Did you know that there are only about 100,000 full time actors in the US?

Have you ever wondered why some actors that are far less talented than you are, seem to get all the good gigs and make the big bucks?

Are you stuck on the acting job roller coaster, going from crappy gig to crappy gig just to add credits to your resume and unable to even go out for the big roles because it would mean choosing between the gig or your steady paycheck?

I Totally Get It

Let’s get something clear right off the bat...It’s NOT your fault!

Look, since you’re reading this, you’re a member of my tribe so I’m going to get real with you.

Think about your circle or friends.

Really, stop and think about a handful of your closest friends. How many of them are full time actors? (and I mean Actors not “actors” LOL)

Here’s where I’m going with that. When you have a strategic career related question, who do you turn to?

Do you turn to your friends that are in the same boat as you are? How much valuable insight can they provide, no matter how sincere their attempts might be?

Do you turn to an acting coach?

Face it, even if you have an agent or a manager, don’t you ultimately need to be in charge of your own destiny instead of dependent on someone else?

I’ve been looking out for my fellow actors for several years now. And helping you guys to make a real living and build careers you love and deserve is what I do.

Just like I did for Chris who said “You helped me solidify and land a HUGE deal that was in the works! Thank you so much!”

Everyone I have shared the Actor’s Revenue Rescue Formula with has seen amazing results and I’m about to share it with you right now.

Real quick, before I tell you what the formula is, let me tell you what it’s not.

It’s not some weird get rich scheme or MLM “opportunity” that will have you begging your friends for help.

It’s not a pie in the sky theory of something that might work and cause money to manifest out of thin air, and fall into your lap while you sit back and do nothing.

The A.R.R. Formula is a real, simple, and proven way to go from where you are now to $100K from acting so you can finally go full time and kiss your day job goodbye.

Just imagine for a moment what it will feel like to walk into your bosses office and say sianara! Never looking back because the Actor’s Revenue Rescue Formula has set you up with a way to bankroll your career.

Have you noticed how YouTubers and Instagrammers are everywhere these days? There is so much opportunity to cash in on right now, if you have a following.

Take a look at this. This is a prime example of the A.R.R. Formula in action.

Did you know that a YouTube Video can make you upwards of $5 per 1000 views even if you are not selling anything in the video.

See YouTube runs on advertisements and advertisers will pay top dollar to show ads before, during, or in between popular videos.

You are probably thinking that this is difficult to do or just something that you could never do. Trust me, if you can hit the record button on your iPhone and count to 5, you can make this happen. You just need to have the proper formula to do so.

Remember that in my last post, I walked you through how Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun built a massive following using nothing more than a flip cam and one laptop? (by the way in case you missed it, go read my last article here)

Check this out. This is probably the easiest way in the world to turn $20 into $13,000.

The premise of the video is simple and I’m sure you’ve seen tons of similar videos. In a social experiment, the guys bought a homeless man a pizza and sent in one of their buddies to ask for a slice, in order to document if greed or giving would prevail.

Fair warning, it’s kind of a tear jerker.

Here’s how this became the best $20 these guys ever spent. Assuming you spent your twenty to buy the pizza (you can actually get one for much less if you’re really strapped) and already have an iPhone, Android or some device with a camera to capture the action, that’s your entire production budget.

This video has generated over 2.6 million views so far. Using the rule of thumb of $5 per 1000views, here’s how the math breaks down.

2,603,000/1000= 2,603 batches of 1000 views. If you make $5 for each batch: 2,603 X $5= $13,015

BOOM! How many times do you have to do this in order to get to your $100K?

I can hear you thinking. That’s great Scott, but there’s no way I could ever get 2.6 Million Views on YouTube!

Not to worry grasshopper. Let’s take a look at another example and you will see how you can hit your target of $100K super quick even without millions of views to a video.

Check out this one of ShowSlimStunna the self proclaimed greatest rapper from Richmond, VA.

Similar concept at work here. He documents what happens when he treats a homeless guy to Burger King and “spares some change.”

Let’s say this cost a grand total of $5-$6 and an iPhone to film and let’s go through the math.

The view count here is much more attaible at just over 136,000.
We divide it by 1000 to get our batch number and we get 136. Multply by $5 (the rule of thumb earnings per batch of 1000 views) and that five dollar bill he invested just turned into $680.

That won’t make you rich but I’m sure it doesn’t hurt either. For some of you even just a handful of those every month would be enough to go full time.

Now for the ultimate one. Let’s say you left your wallet at home on the day you were planning to shoot and only had your iPhone and $0 to spend on production.

Here’s how you turn $0 into $16,000

The scenario in this video is nothing more than a conversation that turned into well over 3.2 Million views. Let’s run through that again.

3.2 Million/1000= 3200 batches X $5 per batch of 1000 views= an even $16,000 profit!

I realize that these numbers probably seem intimidating at first, understand that they are truly very attainable. I’m not giving you examples from a super channel like Roman Attwood’s with over 3.3Billion views.

These are simply, real, moderately successful examples of what’s possible. You don’t have to be a tech wizard. YouTube takes care of the hard part.

You don’t need to learn code or anything like that.

All you do is film something cool, upload, and fill out a few boxes to ensure that people can find your video and that’s it.

Combine that with the secret sauce that I will tell you about in a moment and this thing takes off quickly!

It really is that simple. Remember this is a fluff free zone! I could insert tons of filler content here, but why bother?

If you’re thinking that this isn’t something you want to do, experiments with the homeless, I don’t blame you!

Go back and reread my previous article, especially the section where we talk about choosing your subject matter. Here’s the link to that.

Plus, there’s this little known way that people are using to monetize their platform called influencer marketing.

This has become so huge that even Amazon announced recently that they would be creating a division where in they team up with influencers (people with large social media followings) to promote products sold on Amazon.

They pay the influencers a flat fee for the opportunity to have their products presented plus a share of the total product sales.

Couple this opportunity with what we just discussed above and you only have to do a handful of things right over the course of an entire year to reach your $100K income as a fulltime actor.

Now, I realize I’m kind of making an assumption here that you want to make at least 100K per year.

Maybe you don’t maybe you need less than this. Maybe you would be satisfied with just half of that. Maybe $50,000 per year is more than enough for you to kiss your day job goodbye and get serious about acting.

Whatever that magic number is, it’s totally up to you. What I wanted to share with you here is the formula for getting there. There is absolutely nothing standing in your way, except getting started.

And the way to get started is to start at the beginning. While you could post hundreds of videos to YouTube and hope that someone finds them someday, you could instead guarantee that they would be trending in no time.

I’ll explain. You need to have a way to tell people about it. This doesn’t mean that you need to have 1 Million followers to get 1 Million views.

You absolutely do not! All you need to do is get the party started.

There’s a common practice at nightclubs where the bouncers are instructed to purposely keep the line long outside to give the impression of the club being popular and in demand.

Similarly you just need to have a moderate sized group of people to send to the video in order to get the party started and give the perception of demand.

You accomplish this by boosting your IMDb ranking and beefing up your social media. The way to do that is here.

Go check it out now. It’s literally the only thing standing between you and a 100K career.

One of my mentors always says. Scott. One year from now you are going to be one year older. What will have changed?

Chances are that you have never been privy to what I’m sharing with you here. Maybe you knew some of it but had not connected the dots with how this would help build your career.

Remember acting is ultimately business. You are a business and it’s time that you started acting like one by pursuing revenue channels. This is the way to do it.

Do you remember in my last email where I shared with you how businesses that are sitting on big piles of cash are 5X more likely to succeed than companies that are bootstrapped,?

Guess what actors were sitting on big piles of cash and could afford to take risks with their careers from the start? If you guessed Emily Blunt and Rashida Jones, you are right!

A movie star and TV star both with a meteoric rise. See when you are not bogged down by the pressures of a day job and can focus 100% of your time and energy to acting, you will be leaps and bounds ahead of the starving artists hoping to be discovered.

Take your career into your own hands. If you want to make $100K from acting, then this is the first step. Go check this out now while it’s fresh on your mind.

Actor or Starving Actor?

If you are tired of living the stereotype of a starving actor...

It’s why you can deduct headshots, mileage to and from auditions, and all the expenses that come with being an actor.*

Here’s a head slapper: If you are a business...isn’t it about time that you started acting like one? I’ll explain. Do you know the number 1 reason that businesses fail?

Lack of revenue. Without adequate cash flow businesses can’t keep up with payroll, rent, inventory costs, etc. Sound familiar?

The reason is quite simple. The businesses that are sitting on piles of cash can afford to do things like test out new products, hire more people to drive growth, and most importantly they can afford to make mistakes.

Think about it this way as an actor...

How would you handle your career differently if instead of having to worry about punching a time clock, you could focus 100% on your career. If you could spend all day honing your craft, marketing yourself, and going on auditions without every having to worry about the lights getting cut off, wouldn’t that be like a dream come true?

Well my dear grasshopper, because you are a member of my tribe I’m going to grant you exclusive access to the Actor’s Revenue Rescue Formula where I’m going to show you step by step how to go from a place of zero revenue as an actor to 100K from acting.

Look, if you’re serious about making it in the industry then keep an eye out for my next email. It will basically give a 500% better chance at making it in this business.

Talk soon,
Scott

P.S. Not only am I going to give you the 100K actor’s formula, I’m also going to break it down into a simple and easy to follow formula. By the way the formula has been used by people like Emily Blunt, Rashida Jones, and Lady Gaga. I’ll be taking you through it step by step so get ready.
